S.3 EP.14 - Are we being the mothers God is calling us to be?

Are you being the mother God has called you to be? Or do you find yourself reacting from your own place of hurt and insecurity? In this episode Carla challenges us to raise confident kids by modeling God in our motherhood. Be encouraged as you listen to this episode.

What does it mean to have a confident child?

Raising confident and steadfast, stable kids in a crazy world - doesn’t mean they won’t experience challenges in their mental health or temptations - it means they are secure in who they are and in the love of their parents.

How to “train” your children in the way of Jesus

We are not called to be militant. Remember Jesus’s example as a shepherd - he discipled with gentleness, love, correction, reconciliation, and the disciples did not depart from this way of life! We strictly commanded not to move our children to frustration and anger.

We are called to be good stewards of the biblical reward that our children are. Does God ever make you question who you are and your place in the family? We are called to parent our kids the way God parents us. We are called to be as gentle and loving, even in correction. Take inventory - where do you act like Jesus, and where do you fall short?

We are responsible to manage our pain and our healing as parents

We have to do the work to pursue healing for ourselves so we can step into the fullness of God’s heart for parenthood - when we are triggered, we act out against our kids in our own pain, even though our pain is not their responsibility. This means you need to take care of yourself in order to take care of your kids - everything from eating well to going to therapy. Allow the Lord to do sanctification in you and GET IN THE WORD so you know what His parenting looks like. You are responsible to do the work and imitate Him.

Questions to ask yourself as a parent:

  • Ask yourself if you are a refuge for your child.

  • Do they find peace and comfort in your presence?

  • Are they sure that they are unconditionally loved no matter what they do?

  • Do you offer God-driven guidance wisdom?

  • Do you correct and love the way God corrects?

  • Do you speak truth over your children?

  • Do you point them to Jesus?

  • Do you model rest and prayer to them?

  • Are they confident of who they are in Christ?

  • Do you affirm your child’s identity in Christ?

Training up your children in the way they should go does not look like handing off a list of rules to follow, but a lifestyle modeled off of Him. It’s much more about training ourselves to imitate God so our children know what he looks like. Be slow to speak and slow to anger.

Affirmation

I can take control over my own behavior so I can steward my children well in Jesus’s name.
