S4 EP8| Identity Series: What You Believe About Yourself Influences Everything. Where Are You Getting Your Identity? Part 1 of 4

Our identity is shaped by many things. Some good, some bad. But all fleeting if not rooted in Christ. In this 4 part series we are going to look at 3 common ways women identify, why it’s ultimately damaging and how we can orient back to what our Heavenly Father says about us.

Identity - the Old vs the New

There is a battle waging for our identity. We have an Old Identity, and a New Identity. Our New Identity is given to us from Christ when we are reborn and we are meant to be fully rooted in it so we can live according to God’s design. We still often cling to old identities, however, and they tend to cause us harm over good.

What is Identity?

Identity is who you are - what you think about yourself, the characteristics that make you up, and how you view yourself.

Examples of factors that shape our identities:

  • Family Origin

  • Society

  • Career

  • Accomplishments

  • Failures

  • Nationality or even city

  • Culture

  • Race

How we view ourselves is paramount as it shapes our decisions and how we show up in life. It ultimately also informs where we put our trust and faith. It impacts every facet of your life.

The Truth

We cannot have a successful, spiritual, God-led life when our identity is rooted in the external.  When you are rooted in the truth of the gospel, you cannot be shaken. No one else can truly determine who we are outside of our Creator.

Our old identity is aligned with sin. It was crucified with Christ and our new identity is resurrected with Him. Our new identity is rooted in the steadfastness of God that never changes and we can be sure of who we are and can operate in boldness where God is calling us.

Affirming Truth - My identity is given to me by my Creator.
