S4 Bonus | 4 Reasons My Family Doesn’t Do Santa
This is a conversation Carla had over her Instagram stories and wanted to bring to you here.
But listen - there is no condemnation in what you choose to do with your family. Carla doesn’t believe that Santa is a heaven or hell issue - but one each parent must consult the Holy Spirit on.
In this episode, Carla doesn’t throw scripture at you but shares what she believes to be practical reasons not to promote Santa as a true, living entity that brings presents.

I don’t want to model lying.
When we say something that is not true, in essence, we are lying. Whether it’s sugarcoating, stretching the truth, or refraining from addressing a lie.
Kids do what we do, not what we say.
Modeling honesty & integrity is important to Carla because she wants her son to grow up to be an honest man with integrity.
I don’t want to ascribe Godly attributes to a fictional character.
We say Santa is all knowing - “He knows when you’ve been good or bad.”
We say Santa is omnipresent - “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake”
We say Santa is all-knowing, all-powerful & magical
We ascribe Godly attributes to a fictional character which can devastate our children’s relationship with the true God. Carla doesn’t want to create doubt in her child’s young faith.
Christmas is a financial burden.
Carla doesn’t want her son to believe his presents magically appear at Christmas. She wants him to know that her family works really hard to steward God’s provision in their lives to bless him at Christmas. Gifts come with budgeting, planning, intention and sacrifice - all elements she wants him to understand.
Gifts should not be tied to behavior.
The gift of salvation is not something that can be earned - it’s something Jesus gave freely. Carla doesn’t want her child to believe that gifts and love can be earned through good behavior and striving.
These reasons come from Carla’s carefully reflected convictions, built on respect. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you without judgment or condemnation. Be encouraged to put Christ at the center. Emmanuel - God with us - is the spirit we celebrate as Christians! He came before, released the Holy Spirit to dwell with us, and is coming again.
